Reflexology pregnancy and labour – Dr Julie Mccullough

Reflexology during the first trimester

You can have reflexology throughout your entire pregnancy. I have treated maternity client’s without them knowing they were pregnant. However, some mum’s to be prefer to wait until after they have had their 12 week scan. Before starting their treatments. Either way is absolutely fine.

Reflexology in the first trimester may help to ease some common pregnancy concerns. If you are having difficulty sleeping or experiencing digestive problems. It’s a great way to help with any stress or anxiety that you may be feeling.

Reflexology in the second trimester – up to 37 weeks

During the second trimester reflexology can help support you. During this time I include lymphatic drainage which can help with any swelling/oedema in your feet and ankles. Also, reflexology will provide you with total relaxation giving you much needed time to put your feet up.

Reflexology in the third trimester

When you reach 37 weeks you may wish to  have more regular treatments. Reflexology doesn’t induce babies however, it can be a great way to have some deep relaxation. Helping calm the body and releasing stress. Which is beneficial and may help encourage natural labour.

How many maternity treatments should I have?

Fortnightly or monthly throughout your pregnancy. At around 37 weeks, weekly. If you haven’t had reflexology during your pregnancy, it is absolutely fine to start it at this point.

By now you may find your sleep is disturbed. Find it difficult to get comfortable. Treatments will give you relaxation and encourage sleep. Plus provide support for your body. As you get closer to giving birth.

I am passed my due date and have an appointment for a membrane sweep, can I still have reflexology?

Yes, absolutely it’s fine to have before or after you membrane sweep.

I went to have a pregnancy session with Karen and it was fantastic. I really didn’t know what to expect and didn’t know that feet could be so powerful. It was so relaxing and it gave me 40 minutes just to sit and enjoy the calm and the tranquility. Karen is a wonderful woman, welcoming, kind and knowledge. With a million and one projects on the go and being pregnant this was a much needed treatment. I would highly recommend Karen and Wellbeing Treatments to a friend. – JW, Oxford

I’m writing to let you know some exciting news – our son, Leo Joseph, was born at 5am on Sunday morning, after a very quick labour, and taking us by surprise arriving exactly two weeks before his official due date! It was a water birth in the spires midwife unit, and went as straightforwardly as these things can – we only got there at 2am and three hours later he was with us! I think the reflexology definitely helped me stay more prepared and relaxed in the last few weeks. We’re all well, discharged the same afternoon, and now getting to know each other at home. – HH, Oxford
